How to use PoE power supply?
For power supply, we should have an idea of PoE firstly. PoE (Power over Ethernet), means that electric power comes out from PoE switch to IP-based terminals (such as IP phone, wlan access point and IP cameras) through Cat5e network cable. Of course, both switch and IP-based terminals have built-in PoE module; If IP-based terminals have not PoE module, it needs to use Standard PoE splitter.
Normally, we choose to use international standard PoE switch, which supports 48V-52V, follows IEEE802.3af/802.3at. Because this PoE switch has PoE smart detect function. If we use non-standard PoE switch, 12V or 24V, without PoE smart detect function, when output electric power to IP-based terminals directly regardless they have built-in PoE module or not, it is easy to burn IP-based terminals ports, even damage their power module.
How far the signal transmission is?
The transmission distance of network cable is depends on the materials of cable. Normally, it need to use oxygen-free copper, because the oxygen-free copper’s resistance is smaller, within 30 ohms for 300 meters, also the copper core size is generally 0.45-0.51mm. In a word, the bigger the copper core size, the smaller the resistance, the further the transmission distance is.
According to the Ethernet standard, the max signal transmission distance by PoE switch is 100 meters, which means POE switch uses international standard network cables for power supply is limited in 100 meters too. More than 100 meters, data could be delayed and lose. In order to ensure the quality of project, we generally take 80-90 meters for cabling.
Some high-performance POE switches claim to be capable of transmitting signals up to 250 meters in 100Mbps network, is it true?
Yes, but the signal transmission is reduced from 100Mbps to 10Mbps (bandwidth), and then the signal transmission distance can be extended to Max 250 meters (cable with oxygen-free copper core). This technology cannot provide high bandwidth; On the contrary, the bandwidth is compressed from 100Mbps to 10Mbps, and which is not good for smooth high-definition transmission of monitoring images. 10Mbps means only 2 or 3 pieces of 4MP IP cameras can be accessed to this Cat5e cable, each 4MP IP camera’s bandwidth is Max 2-3Mbps in Dynamic scene. In a word, Cat5e network cable is no more than 100 meters in cabling.
